He was my mother's youngest brother. He also went by the stage name of Rocky Ned. My Mothers, family have strong roots in Currabubula as evidenced by my uncle's, middle name and the number of Donaldsons who still live or have lived in the area. We all grew up singing this song particularly if Uncle Eddie, who had a good voice, was around. The reference to his grandfather being shot at by a Bushranger, who I believe was Thunderbolt, is a true story and the hat with the bullet hole in it was still in the family well into the 20th Century. My Mother often talked of playing with it when she was young. Breaker Morant also worked with the family at some stage, but I forget the detail. As an old boarding school friend of mine's funeral is this weekend and he came from and will be buried in Currabubula I went looking for the song as his wife wishes to play it at his wake. My school mate told me they used to sing it all the time in primary school. My Cousin thinks he has the original 78 record and maybe the score stored away somewhere but that may take some time to find. Meanwhile, Dusty Rankin does a good job but as best I can remember my Uncles version was softer and understandably had a more personal touch to it but I don't recall the yodel.<br />I was glad to read your blog mentioning my Uncles name as the composer as on spotify it attributes it to Dusty Rankin so i would be interested to know where you picked up on my Uncle's name.
